Liveable Theology

One of our values as a denomination is “Livable Theology.” The idea behind this value is very important. Denominations that emerge in part because of theological drift in another denomination can understandably become highly focused on protecting their theology from the kinds of shifts they previously experienced.

In ECO, we certainly wanted to clearly articulate our core theology in the Essential Tenets, a document that our officers receive, adopt, and are bound by. We also intentionally established a very high threshold for changing those tenets. But there can be a temptation to assume that once we have articulated our essentials, our theological work is finished.

I am thankful that theological reflection and work have continued across ECO. We need to continually ask how our Reformed, evangelical theology, expressed in the Essential Tenets, speaks faithfully and practically into the situations our churches and leaders are facing today.

One resource you may not be fully aware of is the book entitled Gender, Sex, and the Kingdom of God. This collection of theological writing is designed to help churches think theologically about the practical issues our congregations face regarding sexuality and gender identity.

To be clear, this resource is not prescriptive or authoritative in the way the Essential Tenets are. Rather, these writings are intended to help us wrestle faithfully with complex topics. You may even disagree with how a particular author approaches a specific question or situation. Regardless of the conclusions you reach, our hope is that these resources will help you engage these challenges thoughtfully, biblically, and theologically.

The Standing Theology Committee (STC) continues to explore the most significant challenges facing our congregations and to help our leaders think theologically about those challenges. Before developing its next set of resources, the STC wants to ensure that it is addressing the issues and concerns that are most pressing for our churches and leaders.
